Compression Fracture

Compression Fracture:

Compression fractures are small cracks in the vertebrae (the bones that make up your spine) and are caused by spinal injuries, tumors and most often by Osteoporosis. These fractures cause pain, can force the patient to curve their posture, and can even cause muscle weakness and trouble performing everyday activities.

These cracks or breaks in the vertebrae can cause pain immediately, and can get worse

over time. The fracture can compress the spine, often times making the patient hunch over and decrease their height. Although more common in women over 50 years old,

there is a higher risk of Compression Fractures as people age, regardless of their gender.

Symptoms

  • Back Pain, that progressively gets worse and often relieved when laying down

  • Decreased Flexibility of the Spine

  • Loss of Posture and Curving of Back

  • Loss of Height

Treatments

At Expert Vascular Care we perform Kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive procedure to treat vertebral compression fractures and strengthen the spine. During this procedure, an Interventional Radiologist uses X-Ray equipment to place needles into the vertebra, and then inflates a small balloon to create space in the area that requires treatment. Once the space is open, the Interventionist will restore bone height, by injecting bone cement into the vertebral space, therefore relieving pain and strengthening the back. At Expert Vascular Care we provide Kyphoplasty procedures, right in our office.
